Magnitude systems in old star catalogues

چکیده
Abstract. The current system of stellar magnitudes first introduced by Hipparchus was strictly defined by Norman Robert Pogson in 1856. He based his system on Ptolemy’s star catalogue ‘Almagest’, recorded in about 137 A.D., and defined the magnitude-intensity relationship on a logarithmic scale. Stellar magnitudes observed with the naked eye recorded in seven old star catalogues were analyzed in order to examine the visual magnitude systems. Despite that psychophysists have proposed that human’s sensitivities are on a power-law scale, it is shown that the degree of agreement is far better for a logarithmic magnitude than a power-law magnitude. It is also found that light ratios in each star catalogue nearly equal to 2.512, excluding the brightest (1st) and the dimmest (6th and dimmer) stars being unsuitable for the examination. It means that the visual magnitudes in old star catalogues fully agree with Pogson’s logarithmic scale.

متن کاملSurvey of long-term variability of stars I. Reliability of magnitudes in old star catalogues
The comparison of visual magnitudes of stars compiled in old materials is expected to yield informations about their long-term magnitude variations. In seven old catalogues whose philological studies were finished, the sampled stars amount to 2124 except for stars that we could not identify, double stars and known variables. Comparing seven old materials each other, the independency of catalogu...
متن کاملDASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane
Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...
متن کاملThe UCAC3 Star Catalog: A New Catalog of Optical Reference Stars for Space Surveillance
Version three of the U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC3) was released in August 2009. As the first version of the UCAC to cover the entire sky, UCAC3 is a suitable source of optical reference stars in the R = 8 to 16 magnitude range. Containing just over 100 million objects and providing stellar positional accuracies of about 15 to 100 milliarcseconds (mas) per coordinate, UCA...
متن کاملDoubling the number of Be/X-ray binaries in the SMC
A correlation of X-ray source and Hα emission-line object catalogues in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) shows that more than two thirds of the optically identified Be stars in Be/X-ray binaries are found as emission-line objects in the catalogues. On the basis of this result we propose up to 25 X-ray sources mainly from recent ROSAT catalogues as new Be/Xray binaries and give their likely opti...
